The Virgin Megastore is taking all my money. All month long here in Chicago they've been doing a $10 sale on CDs and DVDs. Normally you'd think it would just be the bottom of the barrel weird obscure compilations and people you've never heard of, but they've got some really good stuff out. Some of the CDs are only a year or two old. Every week there's new stuff in the bins. I don't know how many discs I've bought over the past few weeks, but I picked up a bunch: everything from Bob Marley to Alice in Chains. My Ipod is very full these days...
Speaking of Ipods and CDs, if you'd asked me a couple years ago or even just a year ago I would have told you differently. I always thought CDs would be around for quite some time because people like having something in your hand with artwork and a nice booklet. Since I've gotten my Ipod I'm understanding why people think CDs are going bye bye. I spend a lot of time travelling and listen to a lot of music. I used to just have this big 60 CD folder/case thing that I dragged around with me. It was big. My Ipod holds more. Quite a bit more. And it's about the size of a pack of cigarettes. You really can't understand how nice it is until you've actually tried it. It's also great because all those little 4 or 5 song EPs I've gotten over the years finally have a place where I can listen to them. I never really wanted to bother with them in the car since it meant having to pop discs in and out every 15 minutes. Plus I can just shuffle through my collection of songs. With enough caffeine, I could literally listen for several days straight.
This is the future of music listening I think. A little box that holds your entire collection that you can take with you wherever you go. You'll plug directly into the box and listen or plug it into your car. The Ipod and probably a bunch of the other MP3 players out there can do this now. Eventually you probably won't even need to take a box with you. You'll be able to access your music anywhere you want via wireless technology. A sort of wireless listen-on-demand.
So given this new direction for music distribution, last week I signed a digital distribution agreement with CDBaby. They'll be handling digital distribution of Falling Off the Merry-Go-Round and probably anything I release in the future. What does this mean? Hopefully pretty soon you'll be able to go to the ITunes music store or Rhapsody.com or the new Napster and purchase my music. You won't have to wait for the CD to get shipped to you or show up in a store near you or me to tour near your town. You'll just have to click it and enjoy. I'm really excited about this because I've been doing it for a month or so myself now, and it's so cool. I'm really not missing jewel cases that crack from sliding around my back seat at all.
